Cleansing the Home

  • Open a door or window slightly to allow the negative energy to leave easier
  • Take your stick or bundle and light it with a candle, match or lighter.
  • Allow your smudge to burn for 30 seconds to a minute, then carefully blow it out.
  • Move around the space in which you wish to clear the energy – be it your bedroom, office, car or your entire home – allowing the smoke to waft around each area.
  • Direct your smudge into the corners of each room or space you are cleansing by using a feather to help lift stagnant energy. Using  a feather  transforms  the smudging ceremony by guiding the smoke and energy into the wind to be cleansed., an example that you could say aloud would be: “Clear.  Cleanse.  Release. White light.”.  If you are releasing entities you could add: “Go to the light.”
  • A rich smell will fill the air, bringing peace and clarity to the moment.
  • Once you have cleansed your space, place the smudge stick in a fireproof bowl filled with sand or dirt or you can use an abalone shell (From a spiritual perspective, abalone shells represent an offering from the ocean imbued with the nurturing energies of the water element: empathy, compassion, intuition and the divine feminine—which also makes them ideal altar tools for anyone looking to embody those qualities.) and extinguish or allow the embers to burn out.
  • Remember to always be mindful when smudging and exercise care and caution when working with fire.
